I have long been active in clinical services, research, and advocacy to support those who have - and who care about others who have - communication challenges. Having grown up with selective mutism (SM) long before there were corresponding diagnoses or resources - let alone clinical services - I feel a deep sense of connection to people navigating selective mutism and related challenges. My own experiences with SM have played a major role throughout my personal and professional life.
Blessed with being recognized internationally for scholarly expertise in clinical neuroscience and neurogenic communication disorders, I am a practitioner of relationship empowerment, restorative practices, and applied improvisation to support communication confidence. I invest in people first, through evidence-informed practices tailored to individual needs. My special expertise in SM is in communication challenges that people continue to experience after they no longer meet the diagnostic criteria for SM. My approach is highly adaptable to individual needs, and I am often involved in work with high-profile clients seeking special attention to confidentiality.
In addition to my clinical work, I have over 25 years of higher education and healthcare leadership experience in large public and small private institutions, serving as president of a national professional organization, dean, founding director of three large multi-campus interdisciplinary institutes, school director, administrator of two clinics, and leader of many multinational projects. I am a founding member of the World Rehabilitation Alliance (a World Health Organization (WHO) entity), founding representative of the Global Rehabilitation Alliance (a WHO affiliate), and a WHO consultant. I have held appointments at universities in China, Korea, Malaysia, and Honduras and am involved in academic collaboration in Brazil, Cambodia, Honduras, India, Iran, Thailand, Ukraine, and Vietnam. I chaired the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA’s) committee on ethics in global engagement, and served as Chair of ASHA’s International Issues Board. I also led the first-ever Global Summit on Higher Education in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I am the author of the seminal textbook, Aphasia and other acquired neurogenic language disorders: A guide for clinical excellence, recently released in its second edition.
