Selective mutism (SM) is a complex anxiety disorder that affects many children and can be challenging for parents and caregivers to navigate. Parents and caregivers play a critical role in their child’s treatment and recovery, and finding family-friendly exposures is essential to help children overcome their fears. In this webinar, our presenters will share fun and interactive strategies for caregiver-led behavioral exposures that can help children with SM reach their treatment goals. By blending pleasurable play with exposures, caregivers can cultivate positive relationships, increase motivation and engagement in treatment, and ultimately generalize play-based verbal gains with other people, in various settings. This webinar will be an excellent resource for parents, caregivers and mental health professionals who and are looking for effective and enjoyable treatment strategies.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify 3 components of effective exposures for selective mutism
2. Describe 3 examples of speaking exposures during fun (preferred) activities
3. Summarize 3 examples of interactive, speaking exposures during non-preferred tasks
